A Pembroke Park commissioner and former mayor has been charged with misusing 911, according to Broward prosecutors. Geoffrey Jacobs, who served as mayor for two years and is currently serving as a commissioner has been charged with one misdemeanor count of making a false 911 call. The charge stems from a November 8, 2023 incident where Jacobs called the police during a town commission meeting, falsely claiming that Mayor Ashira Mohammed was in possession of a gun. According to police, Jacobs, 48, told Pembroke Park police that he was “in fear for his safety” and that Mohammed was in possession of a firearm. Sheriff office deputies responded to the scene, where they search the belongings of Mohammed. No gun was found.
Jacobs’ tenure has not been without controversy. Since he’s been in office, Jacobs has built a reputation for being loud, rude, and rambunctious — using city resources for political purposes and to attack political opponents. He lost his police certification in Arizona, where he was accused of alleged sexual assault numerous times, as well as alleged corruption, and alleged abuse of public resources.
Mayor Ashira Mohammed, who is black, told The County that she is glad justice has finally caught up with Jacobs. "He's a bully. He has created a toxic work environment for his colleagues and city staff. It is unfortunate that he (Jacobs) would abuse his power and engage in behavior unbecoming of a city commissioner." Others are calling for Governor Ron DeSantis to suspend Jacobs from office.
Jacobs’ relationship with the mayor and other commissioners in his city has been rocky. He’s also had a strained and abusive relationship with city staff, including former HR Director Babette Friedman, who sued the town and Jacobs; former legislative aide Steven Meza, and dozens of other staff. Since he was removed as mayor in 2023, he spent the last year on the commission as a commissioner, battling with his colleagues where he made personal attacks, and sought defamatory and frivolous investigations into political opponents — weaponizing city resources.
According to court records, he’s scheduled to be arraigned on April 9.
