There were many surprises in races across Broward, and some upsets too. Here is an overview of those races.
Incumbent Gregory Tony defeated challenger Charles Whatley in landslide.
Woody Clermont beat Samuel Ford Stark
Mayor Dean Trantalis won a final 4-year term, defeating three challengers including lobbyist Barbra Stern. In District 1, incumbent Commissioner John Herbst won re-election over challenger Norby Belz. In District 2, incumbent Commissioner Steve Glassman defeated two challengers for a final 4-year term. In District 4, former Commissioner Ben Sorensen made a comeback, ousting incumbent Commissioner Warren Sturman and beating two other challengers in a landslide.
In Oakland Park, Commissioners Aisha Gordon and Letitia Newbold won re-election to 4-year terms, emerging from a crowded field of six candidates. It appears that newcomer Fitzgerald Budhoo has won the third seat, with just over 100 votes more than his nearest opponent, former Commissioner Michael Carn.
Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton easily cruised to victory with 72% of the vote against rivals Mike Sansevero and Mark Beigay.
In Lauderhill, Commissioner Denise Grant defeated Vice Mayor Lawrence "Jabbow" Martin for a 4-year term as Mayor. Melissa Dunn and Ray Martin were re-elected to the commission, and they will be joined on the dais by John Hodgson, and former Commissioner Richard Campbell.
Acting Mayor Veronica Edwards Phillips wins a full term after defeating several challengers. Easton Harrison beat former State Rep. Anika Omphroy, and Tycie Causwell wins and will return to the dais. Karlene Maxwell-Williams beat two challengers.
Incumbent Mayor Josh Levy wins a third term, Idelma Quintana and Peter Hernandez re-elected to the commission.
Joyce Davis, Luis Rimoli, and Marco Salvino were re-elected to the commission.
Louis Reinstein beats H. Wayne Clark, to keep a seat on the Plantation City Council.
Regina Martin wins re-election to the commission following an arrest for battery against her daughter. Dee A. Lewis-Ricketts wins re-election.
Commissioner Marlon Bolton easily won re-election to the Tamarac City Commission. Krystal Patterson ousted incumbent Commissioner Elvin Villalobos.
Voters approved two ballot measures, one measure is a housekeeping cleanup of language in the county charter. The other, gives the Broward County Office of the Inspector General (OIG) jurisdiction over the Broward County School Board.
